The Mid-Autumn Festival is also known as the reunion festival or the mooncake festival. It is a traditional Vietnamese culture carrying an interesting origin and meaning. But perhaps not all of us know well about the mysterious legends and customs of the Mid-Autumn Festival. The moon is the brightest and roundest on this day and it is also the time people gather together. Thus, let's go back in time, return to the folk and together explain this meaningful mooncake festival.
For thousands of years, in every autumn, people eagerly welcome the Mid-Autumn Festival on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Under the bright moonlight, they gather together and wish for a peaceful life. But not everyone knows the origin and meaning of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Many people believe that the Vietnamese Mid-autumn Festival originated in China, but in fact, when it comes to anecdotes, the Vietnamese and Chinese have different origins about the Mid-Autumn Festival.
If the Chinese people's Mid-autumn festival refers to the love story of Hang Nga and Hau Nghe, in Vietnam, it weaves the story of Uncle Cuoi and Chi Hang.
In the Chinese historical story of the Tang Dynasty, the origin of the Mid-autumn Festival is associated with Yang Guifei. She was one of the four greatest beauties who made up the anecdote of China at that time. It was also because of her beauty, the courtiers thought that she enchanted King Tang Xuanzong, making him immersed in wine and neglected the main court. Tang Xuanzong was forced to give his favorite concubine a white silk ribbon to strengthen the court in great mourning. His unrelenting grief moved the fairies. Thus, on the night of the brightest autumn moon, the King was taken to heaven to meet Yang Guifei again. After returning to the earth, he set up the Mid-Autumn Festival to commemorate his beloved concubine.
However, in Vietnam, a myriad of documents record that the Mid-autumn Festival was held under the Ly Dynasty in the Thang Long citadel. It was the occasion that King Ly wanted to thank the Dragon God for bringing rain for bountiful crops and for his people.
The Mid-autumn Festival cannot be without the colorful lanterns shining brightly under the golden moonlight. For the Vietnamese, lanterns are made for children to play in the mooncake festival. The lights are in a variety of shapes ranging from flowers, fish to bear, stars, etc.
Vietnamese lanterns are handmade from bamboo and wind paper. Painted on the outside of the lanterns are extremely unique embroidery strokes. Vietnamese lanterns are the expression of family happiness and well-being.
In the Mid-autumn Festival, the streets are bustling with drums and lion dances. The Chinese perform the lion dance on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, while the Vietnamese perform the lion dance during the Mid-autumn Festival. The Lion dance is usually held on the 14th and 15th night of the mooncake festival. The Lion dance team consists of a person wearing a lion's head and directing the whole team to dance according to the beat of the drum. The Lion symbolizes a good omen, hence, the Mid-autumn Festival Lion dance is a wish for good omens to come to everyone.
It seems that mooncake has become a cake only available and indispensable on the occasion of the Mid-autumn Festival. Made from wheat flour with lotus seeds and powdered sugar, mooncakes symbolize family reunion and harmony.
Mooncakes are usually cut with the exact number of family members. The more even the slice of cake, the happier the family will be.
Compared to the year 2020, the mooncake festival 2021 comes earlier, on September 21, 2021 (according to the solar calendar) and August 15, 2021 (according to the lunar calendar).
